NEW TRENDS AND PRACTICES IN THE WORK LIBRARIES OF LATVIA DURING THE LAST 3 YEARS

Māra Jēkabsone

The presentation will be based on the annual Report of Latvian libraries in year 2017, 2018 and 2019, as well as on the results of the latest questionnaires and experience exchange discussions, and will give an overview of the main trends, problem solutions and new services and activities in public and academic library sector. The number of public libraries is decreasing, the workloads are reduced or combined with other duties, the funding is mutable, but the requirements from the side of readers and society are growing, the view on academic libraries from academic staff and students is also changing, and to develop library services is often a challenge. But librarians are wisely, dynamic and creative, and continuously are introducing new services and improving existing ones, as well as realizing original activities to serve the community as efficient as possible and to attract new target groups to the library. One solution is project management, which is used not only for getting new ICT, but also for diversification the forms of library events and other offers, another one is library advocacy and promotion activities, which not only contribute the popularity and recognition of the library, but also strengthen the support of the municipality. The presentation will give a strong view that libraries are evolving and moving towards success, and good examples how it is realized in Latvian libraries.
